The best of Pietrarsa in a day: thehistory of the Italian railway was born in Pietrarsa, when the pavilions of the Royal Mechanical, Pyrotechnical and Locomotive Works were inaugurated in 1840 at the behest of Ferdinand II of Bourbon to enfranchise the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies from English and French technical supremacy. Pietrarsa thus represents Italy's first industrial nucleus, active until the 1970s. In 1977 the workshops were later designated as a railway museum.

Nestled between the sea and Mount Vesuvius with a spectacular view of the Gulf of Naples the site is unique in Italy in terms of both the wealth of materials preserved and the charm of the location. It covers an area of 36,000 square meters, part of which is occupied by a wonderful botanical garden with plants from all over the world.
